The idea for a re-envisioned, easy to understand, modernized measuring tool came about during an undergrad teaching class. The lesson was on 1⁄4 inch measurements in a fifth grade class. When attempting to explain these measurements, a roadblock occurred due to the inability for the students to see/visualize that 1⁄4 inches were also 1⁄2, 3⁄4 and 1 inch lines. One by one, the students expressed that the second longest lines were 1⁄2 inches and the longest lines were 1 inch. Improvising by using a standard wooden ruler and five different colored markers, each increment of measurement was marked. The lesson was reintroduced to the students with the revised ruler resulting in the successful understanding of measurements. Thus, the invention of Measure By Color™ the color-coded ruler was born!
Measure By Color™ was imagined, designed, and invented by an Indiana University Bloomington Alumni and Indiana resident Gretchen McCormick
